Investments

We believe it matters where your money is invested, but we don’t take for granted that it should come to CDCU just because we are your locally owned and controlled credit union. We know that we have to earn the right to be your financial institution of choice, and we have to work hard to keep your business. That is why we offer a wide range of investment products such as term deposits, mutual funds, retirement plans and brokerage services. And that is why the staff of CDCU are trained to go the extra mile when it comes to service satisfaction.

Term Deposits

A term deposit is a sum of money deposited for a fixed period of time, earning a fixed rate of interest over that period. Generally term deposits pay a higher rate of interest than savings accounts and, the longer the term, the higher the rate. Features and benefits of our term deposits include:

  • Short term deposits available from 30 to 364 days
  • Longer term deposits available from one to five years.
  • Interest rates are guaranteed for the length of the term
  • Available as redeemable and non-redeemable deposits - in the case of the former, funds may be withdrawn before maturity but at a lower rate of interest
  • Minimum deposit requirements vary according to the type and term.
  • Interest may be paid monthly, quarterly, annually or on maturity of the deposit.
  • Term deposits can be used as security for a low interest rate loan.

Term deposits provide considerable flexibility when it comes to investment options. They can be an ideal place to "park" funds until you have decided what to do with them, or can be used as an "assured income" section in your portfolio. Many people purchase term deposits on a "staggered" or "laddered" basis in order to balance out their portfolio and remove some of the interest rate risk.

Mutual Funds

A Mutual Fund is a portfolio of securities managed by an investment company and owned "mutually" by a large number of investors. The money invested by these individuals is used collectively to purchase securities for the fund's portfolio. Each investor owns a proportionate interest in the fund depending on the amount invested. We offer a family of ethical funds and a variety of funds designed to meet the individual preferences of investors.

Mutual funds provide investors with a wide array of options, but are a very specialized field and purchasers should be aware of all the consequences before making a decision. For example, Mutual funds are not covered by any form of deposit insurance, and are subject to fluctuations in market value. Units are sold by prospectus only by our licensed Mutual Fund representatives.
